East Tahoe Rim Trail, Hwy 50, and Bella

                        Lake Tahoe Views

November 2013
Hwy 50
Base camped at Hwy 50, Spooner Summit.
Day 1  A big day where we did nothing except hang out, eat, and rest.
Day 2  Got up early and headed north from the Spooner Summit on the TRT for about 10 miles, and got off TRT to Marlette Lake. Took Marlette Lake trail back to Spooner Lake to camp.
Day 3  Big day of 20 miles. No fancy names of peaks, but lots of amazing views. We did pass South Camp Peak.

My logs might be a little boring due to the fact that a boulder got me, on my right thumb. Broken or bruised, it hurts, so I type slow and little.

Overall, I missed about 50 miles of the TRT (Hwy 207, a ski resort with no camping, and north of Tahoe City).

From my hiking on the TRT, in anticipation of hiking on the Appalachian Trail and my future adventures, I realized that I got a wonderful dog that was a little too big (60 lbs).  Unfortunately, I had to return her. (Hopefully, she will get adopted.) So, I adopted a smaller dog (15 lbs) so that I can carry her up the ladders on the AT.
Her name is Bella.

Southern Tahoe Rim Trail, Hwy 89, South Lake Tahoe

For the next few days I was base camped in back country off Hwy 89, south of Lake Tahoe.

Day One was breakfast at South Lake Tahoe McDonald's, as usual, for internet and coffee. We headed up Hwy 89, parked, and had a 15 mile day to Freel Peak of the Carson Range in California.

Next day, we woke up to a cold morning. We climbed a high, steep hill with lots of rocks, boulders, and snow. The hike today went to the PCT where the TRT joins on the south side. Back at camp I cooked a good dinner of rice, brie, and baguette. Time to hop in the tent at 5pm, read on the Kindle until 10pm, and sleep.

Northeast Tahoe Rim Trail

Sit, stay, cheese. Third time's a charm.

November 2-3, 2013
Kiddo and I started out with a drive to Tahoe City. She was great the whole way up.

We got up early and met Calvin and Kingsley (friend and friend's dog). We headed down the trail and about 5 miles in, we realized the trail had no tracks to go through, so we did a loop and headed back. Kingsley (Calvin's dog) really helped with getting Kiddo excited because he is a dog full of energy.

The next day we headed to Reno and had the Circus Circus Buffet, then proceded to lose money fast on the tables. Good thing I'm a bad gambler. It's easier to quit since I know I'm gonna lose anyway. Now we're off to start piecing together the Tahoe Rim Trail a couple miles at a time.

Northern Tahoe Rim Trail

Woof!

Week of November 4, 2013

For day one of Kiddo and me on our own, we went west on the northern part of TRT, west of the Brockway trailhead on 267. We made it about 8 miles to Watson Lake. We had a little intro to swimming class, but Kiddo seemed tired from the walk. From there we headed back to the truck and about a mile drive to where we are camped. It's so nice having the tent up and ready so I can just cook (good food too), relax, and do doggy training.

The next day was up to the top of Mount Baldy, NV, where I got to use my crampons for the ice. They helped a lot and made the ice hiking a lot faster and safer. Kahtoola Microspikes, from what I heard and tested, are the only way to go for crampons. They're easy on and off and ya can't even feel them.  Also, I got halfway with my snowshoe search. I found a broken one that I fixed with a little magic.

Next we're off too highway 50 on the northern side of TRT. We will hike 3 days there.

Doug Hikes Mt Lassen 2013

               Mt Lassen View

Oct 26-28, 2013

Mom and I took off for a weekend at Lassen Volcanic National Park. I got some good "scouting" for my upcoming hikes and adventures in the winter months, to see what the buzz is all about. I got a National Park year pass, so I don't have to be cheap about not going into certain parks because of cost. I did some hiking and reading over the three day camping trip. I revisited a 4 mile stretch of PCT, and the side trail leading up to the PCT was a trail I got lost on back during my through hike:)

It snowed 3 inches our last night, so I got to drive out in a nice, new snow. Pretty cool.

Now I'm back home and just went through the process of rescuing a dog from the shelter!!! Her name is ?????? She is a great dog so far and I'm definitely looking forward to doing some miles with her.

For my next journey, I'll be going to Tahoe and hiking some, maybe all of the Tahoe Rim Trail and other trails around there. And yes, I know there is going to be snow. I'm prepared and excited to get some snow hiking in with snow. From there I'll head north, probably to Mt Lassen again, northern areas and the coast, then back home for Thanksgiving. It's a very flexible schedule as of now, and I'll be sure to keep ya updated as best as possible!
